Join us weekly for this new streaming series featuring artists around the state. Interviews are pre-recorded and air at 4pm on Wednesdays at www.youtube.com/UMHumanitiesInst with a simultaneous live (text) chat with the artist.

In this episode, Romulus-based mixed-media artist Judy Bowman talks with Institute for the Humanities staff Amanda Krugliak, Angela Abiodun, and Juliet Hinely about the importance of family, choosing how to move during difficult times, the (art) work of recording human relationships and connections, and more.

About Judy Bowman
Judy Bowman was born on the East side of Detroit, Michigan in 1952. Her family lived in the community that was commonly known as Black Bottom. She attended Detroit Public Schools. From high school, she began taking art classes at Spelman College. After graduation; life happened and her art work took a 35 year pause. No creating art whatsoever. When she retired, she began again, highlighting her culture through her art; her looking glass into the past, present and future of African-Americans with style and grace. Her work focuses on the environment of a mighty people. Working on collages allows her to blend bright colors and facial expressions that burst out of the scraps of paper that comes into its own. She works from the inside out. Though she works deliberately and consciously employing her “mixed-media style,” her unconscious is the undisputed movement in charge. She was a 2016 and 2017 Bombay Sapphire Regional Finalist. She also won the 2016 Spirit of the City Ford Arts, Beats, & Eats Award. Her work has been exhibited in the Detroit Charles Wright Museum and several galleries in Detroit, and many private collections in Detroit, D.C., Philadelphia, Los Angeles, and Chicago as well as the 2018 Essence Festival.
