In celebration of the U-M Center for Chinese Studies 50th anniversary, we have reserved the historic Michigan Theater for a one-time screening of director Hou Hsiao-Hsien's CITY OF SADNESS (bei qing cheng shi), Taiwan, 157 minutes, 1989). The film was the first to deal opening with the KMT's authoritarian misdeeds after its 1945 turnover from Japan, and the first to depict the "228 Incident" of 1947. First Chinese-language film to win the Golden Lion award at the Venice Film Festival. 6:00pm reception in the lobby and 7:00pm screening in the main theater. Free and Open to the Public.
