Communicating Data to Non-Experts
Jack Fishstrom, J.D., M.A., Esq., Program in Technical Communication
In your professional life, you may often have to present technical data and diagrams to non-expert audiences such as managers, clients, politicians, or members of the general public. This workshop covers the key principles for using visual aids (graphs, tables, diagrams, photographs, maps, etc.) to illustrate, enhance, and reinforce your message, while ensuring that they are meaningful to lay persons who may not be familiar with your field or your current work. You will learn to think of your technical message as a story that needs to capture the audience's attention, and you will be introduced to strategies for minimizing distractions to this story so audiences can quickly grasp your main point and support points and understand your complicated and detailed analyses and concepts.
