The Gabii Project was started in 2007 to investigate the origins of Roman urbanism. The site offered a rare opportunity in that respect because it had shrunk to a fraction of its original size before the great monumentalization phase. Thus, Mid-Republican, archaic, and Iron Age remains lie directly under the surface. Thanks to the open-area excavation of over two acres of the ancient city, important information about the long and complex formation process of central Italian urbanization has been acquired.

The Gabii Project aims to redefine the concept of "big dig" for the 21st century. In this sense, it conceptualized the big dig as a logistical platform that makes it easier for a multiplicity of research agendas to be pursued. Methodological self-analysis and innovation are built into the field and recording practices. Digital, online publication is leveraged as a way to disseminate data rapidly and thoroughly.
