What’s Next? Constellations & Orientations: New Ways to Think About Your Skills
Understanding your skills is a crucial part of exploring careers and figuring out your next steps. But what do we actually mean when we talk about “skills”? This workshop will introduce a critical, contextual, and creative approach to skills that draws on your humanities training and experiences. You will leave with a personalized strategy for understanding what you’re good at—not just a generic list of skills. You will also have a chance to imagine how you can use your skills to make a positive impact on the world.
The session will be highly interactive, with significant individual reflection as well as discussion (in breakout rooms and as a large group). To allow for an open dialogue, this session will not be recorded.
Speaker: Derek Attig (they/them) is Assistant Dean for Career & Professional Development in the Graduate College at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. In addition to their work at Illinois, Attig was part of the team that built the ImaginePhD career planning tool for humanists and social scientists and writes regularly for Inside Higher Ed’s Carpe Careers column. Before working in career development, Attig advised graduate students at a teaching center and worked in nonprofit marketing. They earned a Ph.D. in history with a dissertation on the cultural history of bookmobiles in the United States.
