Abstract:

My research is dedicated to neuro-performance: how to increase motor and cognitive capabilities and new strategies to restore them after injury. In my lab we ask if there are ways to capitalize on non-invasive brain stimulation technologies and genetically-based neuromodulation to achieve motor and cognitive functions faster, or perhaps even get to a level that exceeds traditional training approaches. We are working with rodents and large animal models of peripheral nerve injury and traumatic brain injury. We are using multidimensional measurements including behavioral tests, gait and motion testing, electrophysiology, wearable sensors, and neuroimaging to gain a holistic understanding on neuro-performance. We are also studying neural circuits associated with octopus arm movement with the goal of developing new octopus-inspired prosthetics.
