How do we go from tragedy to hope? From death to life? From loneliness to love? In preparation for his new production of Giacomo Puccini’s La Bohème at Detroit's Michigan Opera Theatre — which will start at the end of the opera and perform "backwards" to the beginning — director Yuval Sharon talks about his process towards finding what is still undiscovered in even the most familiar works. From finish to start, from death to the promise of new love, from loneliness and despair to the joy of friendships, wine, and song, this reversal presents the characters and arias we love in a refreshing, new vision of the story. Our favorite starving young artists and lovers survive to hope another day.
Beyond the realm of opera, Sharon examines how imaginative engagement with our past — especially in great art of a former era — can offer a critical mode of imagining our common future.
Yuval Sharon has amassed an unconventional body of work that expands the operatic form. He is founder and Artistic Director of The Industry in Los Angeles and the newly appointed Gary L. Wasserman Artistic Director of Detroit’s Michigan Opera Theatre.
With The Industry, Sharon has directed and produced new operas in moving vehicles, operating train stations, Hollywood sound stages, and various “non-spaces” such as warehouses, parking lots, and escalator corridors. From 2016-2019, Sharon was the first Artist-Collaborator at the Los Angeles Philharmonic, creating nine projects that included newly commissioned works, site-specific installations, and performances outside the hall. His residency culminated in a major revival of Meredith Monk’s opera ATLAS, making him the first director Monk entrusted with a new production of her work.
In Fall 2021, Sharon mounted BLISS, a re-staging of three sublime minutes of The Marriage of Figaro, which marked the first live performance being performed in the iconic Michigan Building Theatre since its conversion to a parking center, breaking a fifty-year performance hiatus in the space.
