The Imani Winds and the Catalyst Quartet present a program called (im)migration: music of change, commissioning music from new voices that reflect historical events and the times we live in.
Featured on the program is a UMS Co-Commission for both ensembles that was composed by the Catalyst Quartet’s former violinist, Jessie Montgomery. Sergeant McCauley is inspired by the Great Migration of African Americans during the early to middle 20th century, from the perspective of Montgomery’s great-grandfather, William McCauley. It brings together spirituals and work songs that reflect McCauley’s route from Mississippi through the West, north to the Dakotas, and eventually back south to Georgia.
