Challenging Shakespeare
This Study Group will be online.
In recent years, a growing faction of scholars and theater practitioners have argued that some of Shakespeare's plays should no longer be performed because of their potential to do harm. In this study group, we'll examine four of Shakespeare's most "challenging" plays alongside adaptations that might challenge how we interpret them.
This group will meet Tuesdays for 8 weeks beginning January 18, reading a play or adaptation each week for discussion during class. (We'll discuss Shakespeare's "The Taming of the Shrew" our first week, if participants want to get a head start!)
Instructor Rebecca (Becky) Hixon is a PhD student in English at UM where she studies Shakespeare, adaptation, and gender and sexuality studies.
Pre-registration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the study group will be e-mailed to you approximately one week prior to the first session.
