Digitizing non-digital data: time, issues, and monotony in the process of digitizing PhD data
Sarah Richardson, PhD Candidate at the University of Manitoba Winnipeg, MB Canada
Integrating datasets and incorporating legacy data is part of the process when working with archaeological materials. The domestic area of the site of Tell es-Safi/Gath, as the subject of my Ph.D., has provided ample opportunities for both the digitization of legacy data and the integration of multiple datasets. I will begin with the history of the site and excavations but will focus primarily on the process of data digitization and the bumps along the way. The digitization of spatial data from past excavation reports and field journals is often a tedious process and we will explore some of the reasons that is the case. I will finish with the reasons that we as archaeologists go through the tedious processes and face the issues that pop up when digitizing and publishing older data, the work that we have been able to do, things that the team has been able to uncover and the possibilities for future research that these endeavors provide.
