Music of Arab America
This lecture will be online
The music of Arab American communities over the last 100-plus years shows a constant navigation of tradition and innovation. The first half of this presentation introduces some of the core elements of Arab music with examples and demonstrations before moving to an overview of how these musical ideas evoke both memory and novelty. The musical history shows creativity and adaptation alongside the assertion of a communal identity, forces that can be in tension, especially as musicians target larger audiences.
