Working in Ukrainian Film and TV – Before the War
Before the war, the Ukrainian film and TV industry was flourishing in multiple languages, and a range of genres and themes.

The Flying Subtitles Collective (FSC), a joint initiative of students and faculty, talks to Iryna Zhygaliuk, a TV and film producer, scriptwriter, and filmmaker. Zhygaliuk graduated from Ohio University School of Film, returned to Ukraine, where she wrote, developed, and produced various TV series in the Ukrainian language for the burgeoning Ukrainian media market, which until then produced predominantly Russian-language content.

Her shorts have been screened in over 25 film festivals worldwide, including her debut student short “Laura vs. Global Warming” (2013). Other shorts, “Mother” and “How I Quit Birdwatching”, explore strained relationships.

In this Q&A, FSC members will ask Iryna about the state of Ukraine TV and film, before the war, and about her own work and interests, particularly the importance of humor in popular media. Join us for this informal conversation on Zoom, including screenings of short films!
