Andean Circle Workshop Series. Mapping Violence: The Lucanamarca Case (Ayacucho - Peru)
Diana Mogrevejo Prado, Chevening scholar in digital archaeology, University of York
The internal armed conflict in south-central Peru began in 1980, in the Ayacucho region. The Shining Path started to take control of the poorest and most forgotten areas of the Ayacucho territory. Peru's incipient democracy, after more than a decade of military dictatorship, did not have an adequate strategy to confront this threatening situation.
In early 1983, the villagers from Lucanamarca decided to confront the Shining Path. However, the latter took revenge and killed in cold blood 69 individuals, including elderly and children. Although the police and military support arrived late and tried to catch Shining Path members. This attempt at counterattack was not successful and led to more extrajudicial killings.
In this workshop, we will reconstruct this event by using maps and GIS. The main goal will be to recreate maps of violence focused on the Lucanamarca massacre. This workshop will demonstrate how spatial analysis can be used to better understand war scenarios and reconstruct the historical context of this dark episode of Peruvian history.
This event is hosted by the Andean Circle Rackham Interdisciplinary Workshop and the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies.
