SMBC Meet and Greet - Audit, Compliance, Finance, and Operations

Our SMBC Meet and Greet Series is for all students seeking a 2023 internship opportunity with our firm. Each session will consist of overviews of the various groups that hire into our programs led by the business members themselves followed by an open-forum Q&A session. Since each session will be different, students are encouraged to attend as many as they like.


Compliance

SMBC is committed to complying with all applicable laws, rules, regulations, and industry best practices. The Compliance Department is responsible for providing compliance oversight of SMBC’s business activities across the Americas Division and managing compliancerisk. Team members design and implement solutions to identify and mitigate risks, develop compliance programs for existing and new regulations, and oversee training programs.

Compliance partners with stakeholders across the organization to enhance the capabilities of our compliance risk management program to ensure it remains agile and ready to meet the needs and requirements of our businesses and regulators. The coverage model includes the centralization of all Group Company compliance functions to establish consistent processes for all compliance activities, including leveraging technology to support daily operations.


Finance

Financial Planning & Analysis

The Financial Planning & Analysis (“FP&A”) Group isresponsible for managing financial planning, budgeting, and forecastingfor the organization. The team provides senior management with a forecastof the organization’s income statement and operating performance, which informs progress of the organization’s strategic plans and uses data to advise management on key decisions on improving performance, mitigatingrisk, or identifying new growth opportunities.


Financial Reporting

The Financial Reporting Group is responsible for maintaining and monitoring the day-to-day operations, consolidation process, maintenance and control of the general ledger and shadow general ledgers of the bank holding company’s subsidiaries and preparing financial statements at year-end.The team communicates with respective subsidiaries for accounting and reporting issues, works with the Accounting Policy team in evaluating impacts of new accounting guidance, and coordinates both internal and external auditor requests.


Regulatory Reporting

The Regulatory Reporting Group is responsible for maintaining and preparing the submission of regulatory reports for SMBC’s branches and subsidiaries. The team performs and owns the daily calculations required for reporting, collaborates with report owners to interpret reporting instructions and validate balances, andconducts various reconciliation of reported balances against the general ledger, across products, and other regulatory reports/schedules. Additionally, the team assists in maintaining proper controls and documentation associated with regulatory reporting and defines business requirements forreport enhancements.


Accounting and Regulatory Reporting Policy

The Accounting and Regulatory Reporting Policy Group is responsible for providing required support for the implementation of new accounting standardsor updates and providing advice and developing policy guidelines on technical regulatory reporting issue for SMBC’s branches and subsidiaries. The team develops, documents, and maintains key rule interpretations and guidance for U.S. regulatory reporting requirements and provides guidance to relevant stakeholders for U.S. regulatory rules and requirements.


Finance Change Management

Finance Change Management is responsible for establishing and managing large-scale programs focused on the implementation of processes, methodologies, and systems that meet regulatory requirements and industry best practices. Finance Change works with Finance Teams and other key colleagues (Technology, Risk, Compliance) to provide project management support, as well as data-based analysis as needed, to support successful project completion.


Operations

Operations at SMBC in the Americas responsibilities span over two major groups that ensure internal and external reporting practices and procedures as well as client account transactions are accurate and appropriate.

Business Control Department Americas Division (BCDAD) This group reviews and processes financial transactions in its Settlement, Loan Services, and Treasury Operationsgroups. Some functions, such as Operations Transformation, are specifically focused on identifying and re-engineering interdepartmental and cross-functional operations, tasks, and oversight areas to improve how staff, functions, and departments operate to ensure efficiency, productivity, and the adoption of industry best practices, leading to the achievementof the strategic goals for the business.

Operations Planning Group (OPG) This group is a team within the Planning Department responsible for planning and managing operational initiatives for various businesses within the firm. OPG performs research, development, and feasibility of new product offerings and strategic business initiatives required by the organization and/or Head Office.
