Spin structures determine quadratic refinements of the linking form on the torsion part of homology for closed oriented 3 manifolds and the intersection form on mod 2 homology of closed oriented surfaces. In this talk, I will outline a counterpart of this story for number fields and describe how it explains an anomaly in class group statistics. This is a report on joint work with Akshay Venkatesh.
