Over a field of characteristic zero, standard monomial theory and Young tableaux provide a connection between determinantal ideals and irreducible representation theory of GL_n. In this talk, we will give an introduction to standard monomial theory, and then discuss ideas on how to extend this connection to fields of positive characteristic by working modulo Frobenius powers.
