The late Cuban book artist Rolando Estévez would have turned 70 years old on December 1, 2023. Estévez traveled to Ann Arbor several times during his life to meet with and teach students, deliver lectures, and collaborate on artistic and intellectual projects with his close friend, Distinguished Anthropology Professor and author, Ruth Behar.

Thanks to Behar’s dedicated efforts to build a bridge between Estévez and the University of Michigan, our Special Collections serves as the home for many of Estévez’s artists’ books, including several one-of-a-kind works of art. To celebrate the work of Estévez and the memory of his presence at Michigan, Behar dreamed up the idea of a poetic and artistic tribute to which all are welcome.

Behar has invited author Richard Blanco, who recited his poem, “One Today,” at President Barack Obama’s 2012 inauguration, to the university to join her in conversation about Estévez’s poetry and handmade books. Jamie Lausch Vander Broek, Librarian for Art & Design, will moderate.

A reception featuring Cuban pastelitos de guayaba and live music will follow with examples from Estévez’s prolific and boundary-breaking career on display.
