Student Combinatorics: Springer fibers, tricolor noncrossing matchings, and webs

Veronica Lang

Springer fibers are subvarieties of the flag variety defined by linear operators. Identifying flags with their representatives in Schubert cells, we decompose Springer fibers of certain nilpotent matrices into Springer-Schubert cells. We’ll discuss several combinatorial objects that offer progressively better descriptions of the top-dimensional cells: balanced Yamanouchi words, tricolor noncrossing matchings, webs, and “circuits.”
