LOVE LETTERS: Queer Intimacies and the Arabic Language
Mejdulene Shomali
This talk discusses three collections of autobiographical writing by queer Arabs, collected and published by two queer activist organizations in Palestine and Lebanon: Aswat and Meem. These collections challenge the notion that the Arabic language itself forbids or erases queer sexuality; in the talk, Shomali argues that these collections manipulate Arabic and English to offer new ways of seeing and thinking queer life. She offers close readings of the naming practices writers use and considers a contemporary vocabulary for queer Arab subjects, one that evades, challenges, and upturns restrictive discourses. The collections also demonstrate that Arabs can look to queer Arab communities for strident and intersectional critiques of Arab heteropatriarchy, imperialism and occupation, and heteronormativity.
