The early Northern Renaissance artist Jan van Eyck would often sign his works with the inclusion of the phrase “Als Ich Kan” (“as best I can”). However, the artifacts highlighted in this Sunday Drop-In Tour could more appropriately be described as “not my best”! Based on the popular special exhibition titled Less Than Perfect from 2016–2017, this tour will focus on objects in the Kelsey Museum’s collection that could have been given a bit more attention in their initial creation. As we take a look at artifacts with visible flaws, we will consider how ancient artists and craftspeople responded to concepts such as perfection, imperfection, and failure.

This event is free and open to all visitors. If you have any questions or concerns regarding accessing this event, please visit our accessibility page at https://myumi.ch/zwPkd or contact the education office by calling (734) 647-4167. We ask for advance notice as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.
