Christian Questions, Jewish Answers: George Eliot's Daniel Deronda

George Eliot's writing life was shaped by questions of religious faith. By the time she reached what would be her final novel, the Christian context was no longer sufficient to answer the most pressing questions of her time. In Daniel Deronda, she considered what Jewish history and religious affiliation could offer nominal Victorian Christians seeking meaning beyond themselves.
