The University Symphony Orchestra, conducted by its music director and GRAMMY nominee Kenneth Kiesler, presents the gala opening concert of its 2024-2025 season. The new year is off to an auspicious start with Beethoven’s Consecration of the House Overture – at first ceremonial then brilliant and exuberant. The evening’s featured soloist is internationally recognized pianist Christopher Harding, distinguished member of the SMTD faculty.

Looking ahead to a new season of exciting and moving symphonic music, the USO warmly welcomes its listeners with its first-ever performance of Jessie Montgomery’s songful Hymn for Everyone. Written for the Chicago Symphony during the pandemic, the composer said she “was inspired by the hymn as a tradition of offering some solace, and something to gather around and sing collectively.”

Stravinsky’s colorful and thrilling Firebird Suite ends the concert in the spirit of celebration and triumph! The only university or conservatory symphony orchestra to receive GRAMMY nominations and GRAMMY Awards, the USO’s latest recording release was included in the New York Times Best Classical Albums of 2023.
