The Amazing Eulerian Idempotents -- Combinatorics Seminar

Philip Hanlon, Dartmouth College

The Eulerian idempotents, sitting inside the group algebra of the symmetric group, are a set of pairwise orthogonal idempotents that sum to the identity. They are remarkable for the broad range of contexts within which they arise, from homological algebra to card shuffling to chromatic polynomials of graphs. In this lecture, we will introduce the Eulerian idempotents, discuss some of their algebraic properties and survey some of their many applications.
