Keene Theater, East Quad
701 E. University Ave.

Part of the U-M Alice Coltrane Residency: The Year of Alice–celebrating the life and work of trailblazing musician, composer, and spiritual leader Alice Coltrane. Vocalist Michelle Coltrane and harpist Brandee Younger come together for part conversation, part performance, featuring oral histories and biographical stories of Alice Coltrane interwoven with performances and demonstrations.

Through creative works and masterful performances, Alice Coltrane’s pioneering practice has changed the music world. Prolific in her creation, Alice’s innovative style incorporated both gospel and jazz, leading to iconic works like Journey in Satchidananda (one of Rolling Stone’s 500 greatest albums). Once a profound musician, beloved spiritual leader, and pragmatic businesswoman, Alice Coltrane is now remembered as deeply giving human, known for her emphasis on charity work, education, and spiritual guidance.

Presented by the Center for World Performance Studies with support from the U-M Program in Creativity and Consciousness Studies, Arts Initiative, and Department of Jazz & Contemporary Improvisation.
