Student Combinatorics: Symmetric Functions and the Skein of the Annulus

Amanda Schwartz

In this talk, we'll explore a connection between symmetric functions and skein theory. We'll begin by reviewing the necessary background on both topics. Then, we'll discuss a proof by Lukac that there are linearly independent elements $Q_\lambda$ in the skein of the annulus which obey the same multiplication rules as the Schur functions $s_\lambda$.
