Screening & Lecture with Professor Emeritus of Dance Peter Sparling
Peter Sparling, Distinguished University Professor Emeritus of Dance, returns to SMTD and the new Dance Building's Performance Studio Theatre to present an informal lecture and screening of his recent screendances.
Sparling will provide a brief review of the history of screendance elsewhere and at the University of Michigan, and he will then share his own ongoing efforts to translate dance to the screen. In his words: "The longer I make videos, the more idiosyncratic they become... something about weird hybridizations and unique perspectives or habits, obsessions, the politics of identity and aging, and background threads that weave together to shape an ongoing creative practice."
Images are stills from "Canticle: My Beloved is Mine", filmed at the Duderstadt Center in May 2024 and to be given its first public screening at the event.
