The Belson Clovis Site: A 13,000 Year Old Hunting Camp in Southwest Michigan
Tom Talbot: Site Director, Belson Clovis Archaeological Project
The Belson Clovis site is recognized as the oldest known occupational site in the state. It is located on a small glacial outwash plain in Saint Joseph County. The soil type is a Bronson series sandy loam known for its high acidity. Because of this, the chances of recovering any datable organic material from this late Pleistocene culture are low. This challenges us to extract all the information we can from what little clues they left behind. In this presentation I will cover topics of study related to: Paleo Environment / Ecosystem, Clovis and other late Pleistocene stone tool technologies, the importance of tool stone identification and sourcing, lithic analysis, and protein analysis. The Belson Clovis site, being well into the 5th year of excavation, provides a glimpse into the lives of these early “Hunter / Gatherers” in the Great Lakes Basin.
