Abstract: The invention of group cohomology in the 1940s has provided a powerful link between algebra and topology. In this talk we’ll introduce the topological motivation for group cohomology and give both the algebraic and topological definitions. We’ll compute simple examples using both algebraic and topological tools, explain finiteness conditions, and introduce some fundamental questions that remain open.
