Many U.S. states have developed Statewide Longitudinal Data Systems (SLDS) that house and link administrative education records from pre-K through postsecondary education. These systems have been used extensively for large-scale quantitative education research on many topics. This talk will provide an overview of one such SLDS--the Michigan Education Data Center (MEDC). MEDC is a unique partnership that contains a wealth of information describing public education for all students in the State of Michigan. We will describe how MEDC makes these data available to approved researchers, describe the data included in MEDC and their potential uses, and lay out the process for gaining access. We will also illustrate the type of research that is possible with the data by describing two recent studies in detail.

Presenters:
Kevin Stange is a Professor of Public Policy and co-director of the Education Policy Initiative at the University of Michigan where he teaches graduate courses in higher education policy, economics, and quantitative methods. He is also a faculty research fellow at the National Bureau of Economic Research and faculty affiliate of the Center for the Study of Higher and Postsecondary Education at the Marsal Family School of Education at the University of Michigan.

Kyle Kwaiser is the Senior Data Architect for the Michigan Education Data Center. Kyle's key focus is to keep the data and metadata flowing from the State of Michigan to researchers. He supports the MEDC website, MEDC's research application portal, its data warehouse and the integration of all three. He is also working with State of Michigan education partners as they move to adopt the Common Education Data Standard and modernize their underlying technology stack.

This webinar is free and open to the public.
This webinar will be recorded, and the recording will be sent to all registrants.
