Contexts for Classics Work in Progress Series Presents
VINYL EURIPIDES: A CROSS-MEDIA COLLABORATION
Anastasia Bakogianni (Senior Lecturer in Classical Studies at Massey University) is collaborating with Jim Cogswell (Professor of Art at Stamps School of Art & Design) on a book about Vinyl Euripides, a permanent art installation at the Michael Cacoyannis Foundation in Athens.
Cogswell’s 2022 installation offers viewers a distinctive take on Greek-Cypriot film director Michael Cacoyannis’ cinematic adaptations of Euripides: Electra (1962), The Trojan Women (1971), and Iphigenia (1977).
Following a brief slide tour of the installation, Bakogianni will speak about the cross-media resonance of the project. It adds another rich layer to the reception process, further illuminating Greek tragedy’s role in shaping our modern conceptualization of the impact of war on women.
This event is co-sponsored by Contexts for Classics and the Modern Greek Program at the University of Michigan.
