Student Logic and History of Math Seminar: The Axiom of Determinacy

Sharif Velasquez

Ever since its formulation, the Axiom of Choice has been known to lead to controversial results. Motivated by this, in 1962, Jan Mycielski and Hugo Steinhaus proposed the Axiom of Determinacy—an axiom for ZF, based on certain omega-infinite two-player games—which serves as an alternative to the AC that avoids most of its less desirable consequences. In this talk, we will provide an intuitive understanding of the Axiom of Determinacy and explore some of its consequences, as well as its incompatibility with the Axiom of Choice.
