The Annual Hajja Razia Sheikh Lecture in Islamic Studies
Speech Genres in the Qur'an / Devin Stewart

"Speech Genres in the Qur'an" - The Annual Hajja Razia Sheikh Lecture in Islamic Studies welcomes Devin Stewart (B.A. Princeton University 1984, Ph.D. University of Pennsylvania in 1991). Devin teaches in the MESAS Department at Emory University in Atlanta.
This lecture will focus on the investigation of speech genres in the Qur’anic text. While studies of the Qur’an’s vocabulary, grammar, rhetorical figures, legal rulings, and theological doctrine produce valuable results, the study of the genres that occur in the sacred text, such retorts, oaths, curses, prayers, proverbs, parables, has received only limited attention to date. The lecture will endeavor to show how knowledge of the conventions of particular genres has the potential to explain some of the Qur’an’s most puzzling passages and to shed new light on others.
Beverages and light snacks will be provided. No registration required.
