Geophysical fluid dynamics refers to fluid dynamics on a rotating sphere, and the mathematics behind GFD underlies our modern understanding of atmospheric and oceanic dynamics. In this talk, I introduce some of the basic concepts and equation sets of geophysical fluid dynamics through the lens of the hierarchy of atmospheric motions.
