Student Number Theory: Shintani Descent

Sadie Lipman

For an algebraic group G, Shintani descent is a way to relate irreducible representations of G(Fq^m) to irreducible representations of G(Fq). We will construct the m-th Shintani map, which allows us to form a basis of the space of class functions on G(Fq) from Frobenius-invariant irreducible characters of G(Fq^m). We will compare Shintani bases to the set of irreducible characters on G(Fq) and discuss their connection to character sheaves on G.
