This digital exhibit in the Shapiro Lobby showcases research about and narratives from people across the globe who are part of mixed race families.
In 1967, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in the Loving v. Virginia case that marriage across racial lines was legal throughout the country. Intermarriage has increased steadily since then: one in five U.S. newlyweds (19%) were married to a person of a different race or ethnicity in 2019, a more than sixfold increase from 3% in 1967 (Pew Research Center, 2022).
