In January 1943 the Jewish photographer Esther Bubley took a series of photographs in a boarding house in Washington, D.C. The photographs portrayed life in this Jewish home away from home filled with war workers. Its glimpse into characteristics of the home front during World War II illuminates how some American Jews lived, worked, and loved during one of the most devastating years of the war for European Jews.

Deborah Dash Moore is Jonathan Freedman Distinguished University Professor of History and Professor of Judaic Studies at the University of Michigan specializing in twentieth century urban Jewish history. Her recent book, "Walkers in the City: Jewish Street Photographers of Mid-Century New York (2023)," winner of a National Jewish Book Award, extends her interest to photography.
