My Pekar Years (2004-2012): Creating Comix and Exploring Judaism with 'Our Man'
JT Waldman, Illustrator and Digital Designer
Harvey Pekar’s self-published series American Splendor proved that comics could be more than just super-heroes. Pekar’s legacy pervades much of contemporary independent comix. This presentation charts the final work of Pekar, Not The Israel My Parents Promised Me, a graphic novel published by Hill & Wang in July 2012. Told over the course of a single day in Cleveland, Ohio, the book follows Pekar and myself as we wrestle with the mythologies and realities surrounding the Jewish homeland. This session is an invitation to explore Jewish identity and Israel through comix. I will discuss what it was like working with the famous curmudgeon and present rare video footage and drawings of “Our Man” before his untimely death in 2010.
