Medieval Roman Kalymnos was defined by war and upheaval, leading to the construction of three impressive fortified settlements in the 7th century A.D. The Medieval Roman Archaeological Survey of Kalymnos’ 2025 field season made significant progress toward full digital recording and mapping of these critical sites. Coupled with an intensive program of ‘catch-and-release’ grab sampling and extensive survey across distant mountaintops and outlying islets, a full picture of the island’s Early Medieval settlement system is closer than ever before.

This talk will present several of the season’s findings, particularly new insights into fortification systems, domestic architecture, and the role of the sea.
