The cohomology of mapping class groups of surfaces, and certain finite-index subgroups of them, are of central importance in many areas of mathematics. These groups satisfy a (co)homological duality that can help study them via a certain representation called the "Steinberg Module". In this talk we'll combinatorially define the Steinberg module, and describe how it can be used to compute group cohomology.
