For the first part of this talk, I'll give a brief introduction to the mathematical structure of general relativity. I will then discuss the notion of ADM mass, which gives a "total mass" for asymptotically flat spacetimes. Finally, I'll introduce the positive mass theorem and discuss the geometric ideas behind its proof.
