Topology Seminar: The second rational cohomology group of the Torelli group

Abstract: The Torelli group is the kernel of action of the mapping class group of a surface on its homology. I will discuss recent joint work with Dan Minahan in which we calculate the second rational cohomology group of the Torelli group. Previously, it was not even known if this cohomology group was finite dimensional.
