The Vakil--Zinger space is a normal crossings compactification of the mapping space from smooth elliptic curves to projective space. In this talk, I will discuss how the modular interpretation of the space given by Ranganathan--Santos-Parker--Wise leads to a description of its boundary stratification and a calculation of its cohomology.
