A quiver is simply a directed graph, and a quiver representation is an assignment of a vector space to each vertex and a linear map to each edge. This talk will introduce quiver representations with a view towards applications in algebraic geometry. In particular, I will discuss King's GIT construction of moduli spaces of quiver representations and tilting objects in derived categories. I will also sketch how these can be used to understand 3-fold flopping contractions.
