Mathematical models of soliton gas

Robert Jenkins (University of Central Florida)

In this talk I will describe the idea of a soliton gas, which seeks to describe large-amplitude coherent structures as a dense ensemble of interacting solitons. We will discuss the original motivation of Zakharov; some more recent results extending his ideas to more robust settings; finally, we will discuss our recent attempts to give the theory a more rigorous mathematical foundation and to connect the two main approaches to modeling soliton gas.
