What do ssssslithering snakes and spilling coffee have in common? A lot more than you might think! Earlier this month, the Ig Nobel Prize honored quirky research results that “first make people laugh, and then make them think.” In this talk, we will explore how special functions known as Bessel functions unexpectedly appear in research done by Ig Nobel laureates. We will center our mathematical analysis around the problems of limbless locomotion and walking while holding a cup of coffee. The talk will also highlight the Ig Nobel prizes of this year as well as other Ig Nobel oddities of mathematical interest!
