The Department of Music Education presents a guest lecture by Vanessa L. Bond, Ph.D., with support from the Carrigan Lecture Series in Music Education.

ABSTRACT

"Mistakes are welcome here.” “Failure is not fatal.” “Every failure is a step to success.” Platitudes about the importance of failure abound. And yet, failure is rarely tolerated in our educational and artistic systems. In this discussion, I will interweave empirical research, philosophical perspectives, and personal insights to argue that pedagogical and artistic innovation require space and structures that nurture failure. I will offer concrete possibilities for reimagining specific curricular, assessment, and mentoring practices in music education. Ultimately, if we design intentional opportunities to fail, we open up greater opportunities to grow.
