In 1995, Borcherds proved that a certain coefficient in the expansion of the theta series of an even unimodular lattice is always divisible by 24. Coincidentally, the third stable homotopy group of spheres is Z/24. Are these two appearances of 24 related? In this talk, we will explore this question. The buzzword: topological modular forms (TMF).
