This year, the symposium looks at the Jewish experience in Mandate Palestine and the state of Israel in the broader colonial framework by exploring the complexity of social and cultural relationships between Jews and Arabs in the French and the British imperial contexts. The papers will discuss the effects of colonial modernization on Jewish, Muslim and Christian communities, on migration and urbanization, as well as the ways in which French and British cultures were appropriated in different colonial and post-colonial settings.
