Jews in France and the Legacy of the French Empire
Joshua Cole, Frankel Institute Fellow
Frankel Institute Detroit Lecture Series on Jews and Empires
Contemporary discussions in France about a resurgence of anti-Semitism in recent years have focused attention on evolving attitudes about the successes and failures of the French “melting pot”—the aggregation of diverse peoples and cultures in France across the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This talk will explore the complicated linkages between the history of citizenship in France, and the history of colonialism, decolonization, and immigration, with attention to the significance of these connections for French Jews and their relationship with other populations within the French polity.
