In this workshop, panelists will consider where and how scholars can locate longings for different futures in the historical record. What relationship do these longings have to the present? How do they function as evidence of a desire for transformation (i.e., reorganization) of the here and now? Panelists will discuss the utility of the conventional language of the affective turn, including its possibilities and obfuscations, as well as the transcultural contexts of "longing," "affect," and "future," especially those that present us with differing belief systems. Panelists include:

Venkat Dhulipala, Associate Professor of History, University of North Carolina Wilmington;
Sarah Garibova, Ph.D. Candidate in History, University of Michigan;
Leslie Hempson, Ph.D. Candidate in History, University of Michigan;
Hillina Seife, Ph.D. Candidate in History, University of Michigan;
Kali Israel (chair), Associate Professor of History, University of Michigan.

Free and open to the public. Lunch provided.

This event is part of the Friday Series of the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies. It is made possible by a generous contribution from Kenneth and Frances Aftel Eisenberg.
